No one can ever describe the
traumas of Holocaust. Even people who have died or even survived from it don’t
even realize that the ordeals of that event are the actual reasons why he/she
acts this way in their present life. This depicts directly to Vladek and his
experience with the WWII’s Holocaust. Vladek’s portrayal of the Holocaust
causes great significance in his son’s Art life. Due to these horrific events
that Vladek faced, it changed his entire viewpoint of life immensely although
he doesn’t realize it himself. The traumas that he suffered through Auschwitz
made him a very parsimonious person. Although he is in a very good position
with his financial status Vladek rarely spends money on anything. His
stinginess reflects his life during the wartime, when he had to actually learn
different kind of skills for survival. These skills included saving a piece of
bread for a later meal, including clothes and other important necessities. Those
experiences were responsible for his penny-pinching personality. He used to
steal napkins, matches, etc. Vladek’s way of life affected Art immensely
because Vladek was going through depression and guilt. He was guilty because he
never gave Art his mother’s Anja’s journal that she left for him to read. This
shows that even though Anja and Vladek were both in love with each other, their
relationship never made Vladek a happy person. Even though Vladek married Mala
after Anja’s death nothing changed, and he became much more bitter and
depressed with life. I think, the graphic novel is such an affective way to
tell this tale because it is easier for readers to depict Art’s experience and
actually understand it. As all the characters were personified as animals it
was easier to read the novel quickly and know which character felt what, as
every character portrayed in each panel had expressions while saying their
dialogues. Though Art changed a lot of things to ease the intensifying and tarrying
evidence of the Holocaust, he still narrated the story in a very serious
manner.
